38 Weeks Pregnant

Your Baby

38 weeks pregnant and you could meet your baby at any time! Baby should have put on a nice layer of fat and so appears rounded with nice plump, pink skin.

The movements from baby now are likely in the form of jabs from his/her arms or legs. Other movements are restricted because baby is settled down into your pelvis.

The greasy white substance called vernix that has been protecting baby’s skin is beginning to dissolve now.

Baby is a good size at about 48cm long and weighing around 6 and a half pounds.

While it is good to rest, try to occupy yourself in some way because waiting for something to happen can leave you feeling fed up.

Sleeping at night will probably be hard with all the extra weight, aches and pains, so make sure you are well propped up with pillows to give yourself the best chance of getting some sleep.

You will likely be feeling heavy and clumsy so be extra careful when you are out and about so that you don’t fall.

If you are getting Braxton Hicks contractions you may notice that they are becoming stronger as you get nearer to your due date.

My Second Pregnancy Diary - Week 38

This week I am 38 weeks pregnant and I'm starting to feel a bit impatient and I’m looking out for the slightest sign that something might happen. I need to keep myself busy, because when I do I completely forget that I could go into labour at any time, and I think this is better for my frame of mind.

The party went really well and I’ve managed to get back on top of the housework and washing afterwards, so I feel quite pleased with myself, (and Davo because he helped).

I have had a couple more instances of niggling period tummy ache, but nothing seems to come of it. I think everything is ready for me to go into hospital apart from putting a few snacks in my hospital bag for Davo. Everyone is on standby, and my family have said they are leaving their phones on at night now so that I can contact them.

I’ve been feeling the need to drink lots of milk and eat lots of chocolate. I’m trying not to have excessive amounts, but the desire is definitely there more than it was a few weeks ago.

I’ve seen my midwife this week. Everything is fine, baby is filling up my tummy quite a bit and my midwife guesses she’ll be average size. Her heart sounded really strong, she’s still in the same good position and still very active. I won’t need to see my midwife until I’m 40 weeks now and then she said she’ll do a sweep and find out how things are progressing.

I'm getting quite a lot of Braxton Hicks and niggly tummy aches at 38 weeks pregnant. I would like her to come soon, but at the same time I quite enjoy the excitement of not knowing when it’s going to happen.
