20 Weeks Pregnant

Well done you are 20 weeks pregnant! You’ve reached the halfway mark and you only have 20 weeks left of your pregnancy.

What should be happening with you and your baby at week 20?

Your Baby

Your baby is developing a white, greasy substance on his/her skin called Vernix. This will protect baby from the amniotic fluid.

Baby’s brain is rapidly developing more nerves which enhance the senses of sight, smell, hearing, taste and touch.

At an ultrasound scan, if baby is in the right position, his/her genitals should be visible, letting you know if it’s a boy or a girl.

Baby is now about 25cm long and weighs about 12 ounces.

When you are 20 weeks you should be getting an ultrasound scan. If you want to, you should be able to find out if you are having a boy or a girl.

You may be getting aches and pains in your abdomen as your ligaments stretch. Your belly button may be starting to pop out or become flat if you had an ‘inny’.

Your midwife can probably feel the top of your uterus up by your belly button by now because it has grown so much!

You may also find that heartburn becomes more of a problem. Your midwife should be able to get a doctor to prescribe you something for it, like Gaviscon.

At around this stage, you may start getting more curious and excited about the birth and may want to read up about it. That’s fine, but don’t scare yourself. Perhaps start to consider what type of pain relief you may want.

My Second Pregnancy Diary - Week 20

I’m 20 weeks pregnant! Halfway through, and I've had my 20 weeks scan. Everything looked beautiful and in perfect working order with the baby. I got a lovely photo to take home of baby’s profile and it kind of looks like Freddy but with more of a turned up nose.

The sonographer was good at explaining everything we were looking at and it was fascinating to see it all. Unfortunately, baby had it’s legs right in front of the groin area and so we were unable to find out the sex. Because the NHS sonographers have a lot of people to see there wasn’t time to walk around to try to shift baby’s position, so that was that! Still a mystery!

Afterwards I was kept to see the Obstetrician, and we had to wait for ages. I hadn’t bought much to snack on, so by the time we got out of there I was starving hungry, and on the way home I vomited into one of Freddy’s nappies! Not very pleasant! At 20 weeks pregnant, I'm mostly over the sickness, but travelling on an empty stomach still gets me.

We are going away to Center Parcs next week for a little holiday and so I’ve been busy baking cakes and getting things ready for that. I seem to have come down with a cold but so far it’s not affecting me too badly.

Because I couldn’t find out the sex of the baby I’ve started to wonder about getting a private scan. I looked online and found a clinic nearby called Babybond who do a gender scan. I’ve emailed them and arranged for a scan for when I get back from Center Parcs.
