18 Weeks Pregnant

Your Baby

When you are 18 weeks pregnant your baby is very active but has not put on much weight yet, so his/her skin is very wrinkled. Baby’s hearing has developed so that he/she is aware of sounds outside of your womb. You may feel baby jumping at unexpected noises.

Baby may begin to suck his/her thumb and the bones are becoming stronger. Baby is about 20cm long and weighs around 8 ounces.

You may find your nose becomes blocked or stuffy. This is because the membranes in your nasal passages swell.

When you are examined by your midwife you should be able to hear your baby’s heartbeat quite clearly. As your bump grows, you may find it throws you off balance a bit because your centre of gravity shifts.

It’s a good idea to get in the habit of doing regular pelvic floor exercises in preparation for the birth.

People will be able to notice that you are pregnant and will probably compliment you on looking very well. You will hopefully feel on top of the world at this point. But don’t worry if you don’t. Remember everyone is different, and not everyone has an enjoyable pregnancy.

My Second Pregnancy Diary - Week 18

After wriggling around a lot last week, baby seems to have calmed down again and I’m not feeling it quite so much.

At 18 weeks pregnant, I am definitely getting more good days with the sickness, but surprised at how some days are still bad. I can’t really say I’m over the sickness yet because I’m still vomiting some days and I still feel really exhausted.

I’ve also noticed my skin, especially around the lower part of my face and chin has broken out with lots of spots, sort of like when I was a teenager, or when I’m due my period.

I’m also noticing that I’ve started to become a bit constipated. During my last pregnancy I didn’t suffer at all with constipation, but this time I’m definitely noticing that I’m not as ‘regular’ as usual.

I’m getting excited about my 20 week scan and I’m really hoping they will be able to tell me the sex of the baby.
