How do I know if Im pregnant?

by Alicia
(north carolina, usa)

Question

Well I have symptons of first stages of pregnancy but also starting my period. See I'm breastfeeding and people say some women don't have a period, but a couple weeks after being home I had real bad cramps and then I had streaks of blood in my panties but now I have these little cramps and no blood should I get a pregnancy test or is it just because I'm breastfeeding?

Answer

Hi there Alicia. First of all, thank you so much for taking the time to submit your question on my site. Ok, so when you are breastfeeding you can definitely get all kinds of confusing symptoms that can certainly make you feel as though you might be pregnant again!

My experience was this......every 4 weeks after having Freddy I would get tummy cramps like I was going to start my period. The first month I did get a little bit of blood, but after that, just the cramps with no bleeding. My periods actually started again when Freddy was 5 months old.

Your symptoms sound similar, but in these situations it is impossible to tell for sure unless you do a pregnancy test. I would advise you to take a pregnancy test if you are worrying about it. Especially if you know you have had unprotected sex and it is a possibility that you could be pregnant.

If you think it is unlikely that you could be pregnant due to your sexual activity, then my feeling is that you probably aren't pregnant and breastfeeding is messing with your cycles a bit.

All the best.
